Mercato Metropolitano, the food market on Newington Causeway in Elephant & Castle, will be running a three-day programme of fitness and wellness activities, DJ sets and street food across this August Bank Holiday weekend.

The fun starts on Friday 28th at 6.30pm with a pop-up event hosted by Snap Fitness, the gym chain. The session is open to visitors of all ages and fitness levels, and organisers say no prior gym experience is required. Two participatory challenges form the centrepiece of the evening, including Blazepod reactive intelligence testing, a reaction-training system also used by Formula 1 drivers. Participants’ scores will be displayed on a live leaderboard, with the highest scorers receiving prizes such as gym guest passes and memberships.

On Saturday, from 10am, the site will host Dunk & Grind, an alcohol-free morning social club built around coffee, music and cold plunge sessions. The format launched earlier in August at Protein Studios in Shoreditch and is being staged at Mercato Metropolitano for the first time this summer. Sunday’s session begins at 10am with a morning run club, followed later in the day by carnival music, DJ sets and rum punch, bringing the weekend’s programme to a close.

The market’s regulars will stay in place during the event, including more than 40 international street food traders and a Crazy Boules piste. The community-focused food hall opened in a former paper factory in Elephant & Castle in 2016 and has since expanded to several other locations in the capital, showcasing independent traders, bars and events. In recent years, the South London space has increasingly developed its fitness and wellness offerings, aiming to attract daytime visitors and appeal to visitors looking for alcohol-free social options. The Bank Holiday programme combines both, with morning wellness sessions preceding the evening entertainment across all three days.
