Golden Phoenix, the Cantonese restaurant on Gerrard Street in Chinatown, has teamed up with Borough 22, the dedicated gluten-free bakery with a concession in Selfridges Food Hall, to produce a limited-edition set of three Chinese-inspired gluten-free doughnuts. The collection went on sale at the restaurant on 9th October and will be available until Friday.

The three flavours are a Five Spice Caramel Ring, a Fresh Mango Pudding Doughnut and an Osmanthus Flower Cream Doughnut. Osmanthus is a fragrant blossom often used in Chinese sweets and teas, and mango pudding is a familiar dessert in Cantonese restaurants.

The doughnuts are sold only at Golden Phoenix in boxes of three, containing one of each flavour, priced at £15.80. Stock is limited each day, and the special treats are available until the daily supply runs out.

The collection was developed by Marina Lai-Lentz of Golden Phoenix and Borough 22’s founder Ryan Panchoo with the aim of combining the two businesses’ approaches to gluten-free food to create something specifically for each of their customer bases.

Golden Phoenix was founded by Lai-Lentz’s father, Winston Lai. She introduced a gluten-free menu at the restaurant after her son was diagnosed with coeliac disease, and it has since become a distinctive part of what the kitchen offers, including dim sum and a range of main dishes. To reduce the risk of cross-contamination, the team uses dedicated cooking areas and utensils, and stores gluten-free ingredients separately.

London-based bakery Borough 22 produces gluten-free and vegan doughnuts alongside a range of other baked goods. The team asserts that no wheat is brought into the building.

Lai-Lentz said: “Gluten-free food has become such an important part of what we do at Golden Phoenix, so this collaboration feels really special to us. We wanted to bring together the flavours of Chinese cuisine with Borough 22’s expertise in gluten-free baking and create something genuinely new. We’ve had so much fun developing the flavours, and we can’t wait for people to try them.”
