Pacific Rim Uprising premiere: On the red carpet with John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Steven S DeKnight

Out this week is Pacific Rim Uprising, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s international smash hit Pacific Rim.

Drawn away to pet project The Shape of Water, the second film inhabiting del Toro’s imagined new world of giant monsters, Kaiju, and man-made robots, Jaegers, was instead taken up by Steven S DeKnight, with the acclaimed director remaining on board as producer.

The outcome is a visually spectacular, high-energy action feature that carries through the original film’s themes of exploring a future world of global conflict that cuts across nations, but perhaps lacks some of the depth of the first incarnation.

Helping Pacific Rim Uprising to avoid descending into CGI action movie cliche were Londoner John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, son of Clint, and breakout star Cailee Spaeny as the young trainee Jaeger pilots tasked with saving the world.

We were at the film’s premiere at London’s Vue Leicester Square to hear from the cast and director on the challenges of making a sequel and the fun they had on set.
