Good news for the London food scene: sell-out supper club Little Kolkata are here to stay. Set to launch their first restaurant this month on Covent Garden’s Shelton Street, the team are laying down roots in the heart of London. The new addition to the area’s diverse food scene stays true to the original dining experience which guests have come to love, whilst extending their Calcuttan menu, delivering a longer cocktail list and a wide variety of themed evenings.
 
Little Kolkata is centred around authentic Bengali cuisine, inspired by co-founders Prabir Chattopadhyay and Biswajit Deb Das, the former having be brought up in Calcutta and the latter hailing from Bangladeshi roots. Through his cooking, Chattopadhyay’s aim is to celebrate the spirit of Calcutta by using traditional spices and authentic textures and flavours while also focusing on the health benefits of seasonal foods. His Bengali-style feasts found a great reception among fellow British-based Calcuttans, and thus the supper club was born.  It wasn’t long before Little Kolkata’s supper clubs were fully booked.
 
The menu will also maintain the communal and familial nature of the supper clubs, offering sharing plates of Maacher Cutlet – a cod fish cutlet served with typical Calcuttan mustard sauce Kashundi – and Lilish Maacher Deemer, a spiced fish egg that is very popular with Bengalis. The sharing plates range from £5 to £13.50, whilst side dishes are priced between £2.50 and £5.00. For dessert, guests are able to try traditional Calcutta Mishti Doi – baked sweet yoghurt – along with a Cardamom Coffee Brownie with Rose Ice Cream, which has been inspired by the famous Swiss patisserie in Calcutta, Flury’s. Traditional flavours also reign supreme in the cocktail menu, influencing the Saffron Spritz, an ode to a spice which has been used in Indian cooking for centuries.
 
The interiors, conceived by French designer Meddhi Larouci, will provide a cosy and relaxed environment to enjoy lunch or dinner. Inspired by the diverse culture and quirky decadence that sits at the roots of Calcutta, the design honours both the traditional and modern sides of the city. There will also be a private dining room (available for exclusive hire) which will offer lively and unique themed evenings.
