Theatre Royal Drury Lane debuts Showstopping Afternoon Tea

Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London’s West End has launched its new Showstopping Afternoon Tea, beginning this month in the venue’s Grand Saloon. The experience is being offered as the only afternoon tea served in a West End theatre, and aims to combine elements of performance with traditional dining.

The initiative, which has been officially inaugurated at the end of April, is intended to bring together the atmosphere of theatre with the established ritual of afternoon tea.

The Showstopping Afternoon Tea is served in the Grand Saloon, a Regency-era room within the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, located on Catherine Street. The menu is structured in two acts, echoing the format of a theatrical performance. Act One features savoury options presented on a serving board crafted from the original stage floor, which was removed during restoration work in 2019 after 101 years of use. Act Two centres on sweet dishes, which are hidden beneath a red velvet curtain and revealed at the table, mirroring the unveiling of a stage set.

Inspired by centuries of drama and the romance of the Regency era, the menu draws on dramatic archetypes, whether it be the Hero for the Blythburgh Pork Sausage Roll, the Villain for a Smoky Tarama with Whipped Smoked Tofu and Rye Cracker, or the Femme Fatale for the Hot Smoked Salmon with Horseradish Cream on caraway rye melba. The sequence concludes with a selection of desserts.

Vegan and gluten-free options are available, as well as the upgraded drinks choice (that can be ordered on arrival) to accompany the delicacies with Champagne

The Theatre Royal Drury Lane is among the most historic venues in London, dating back to the 17th century. The launch of the Showstopping Afternoon Tea follows a recent restoration of the building and is part of efforts to offer new experiences within the space.
