Battersea Power Station to offer skyline photography workshops atop iconic chimney this September

Battersea Power Station will host a new photography workshop this summer, offering amateur photographers the chance to capture London’s skyline from the top of its iconic northwest chimney. The event, titled Skyline Photo School, will run from Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th September at Lift 109, the station’s chimney lift experience.

Attendees will ascend to 109 metres above ground level to enjoy panoramic views across London. The workshop aims to teach them how to take effective cityscape photographs in challenging lighting conditions, using the skyline as a dramatic backdrop. Following the rooftop session, the group will return to ground level to focus on architectural photography, using Battersea Power Station’s illuminated Art Deco façade as a subject. The station, a Grade II* listed building, recently reopened following a major redevelopment and has become a prominent cultural and retail destination.

This initiative is led by photographer James Burns, who is known for his long-running project London from the Rooftops, having spent over 20 years documenting the capital from elevated vantage points. Burns said: “London from the Rooftops is my mission and my ode to the city that I love and the city that made me who I am. Shooting at Battersea Power Station and Lift 109 offers one of the most spectacular perspectives of London, and I can’t wait to share my process with others so they can take home their own cityscapes as love letters to this incredible city.”

The workshop is part of a programme of cultural and educational experiences at the newly renovated venue, and highlights the growing popularity of urban photography for professionals and hobbyists alike.
