“They bring out things in each other that they didn’t know they had”: Eve Myles and Gabrielle Creevy on The Guest
Fronted by powerhouse performances from Eve Myles and Gabrielle Creevy, The Guest explores deep into the unlikely bond between two women from very different worlds. Ahead of the series premiere on the BBC, Myles and Creevy spoke with The Upcoming about their insight into the allure of intense female friendship.
Myles introduced her character with sharp clarity: “Fran is a relentlessly ambitious, confident, successful businesswoman who affects anything and everyone in her stratosphere. So she was a very challenging and unique, messy woman to find, and I enjoyed every second of it.” From her very first scene, Fran’s presence disrupts and disarms. “The first time we meet Fran, obviously, she’s in her very grand precinct, and instantly we realise that this woman is from a different class and culturally quite different,” Myles explained.
Asked why these kinds of female relationships resonate so deeply with audiences, Myles didn’t hesitate: “Because it’s complex – it’s not actually an easy thing to talk about or to try and describe or explain; it’s about something very, very intoxicating and very kind.” For her, the allure lies in the contrast: “They both have great strengths, but they both have great weaknesses.” Creevy echoed the sentiment, noting how their characters evolve through one another: “They bring out things in each other that they didn’t know they had.” It’s a dynamic that breathes authenticity into the series – a relationship built not just on an unexpected connection, but on the ability to surprise one another.
The making of The Guest is as precise as its emotional undercurrents are expansive. “It’s not easy stuff to write,” says Creevy, as the conversation turned to the show’s tightly paced story. Myles spoke with admiration for Matthew Barry’s writing: “Everything is so deeply embedded from the beginning, there are so many seeds popped in there and you really, really have to honour what’s on the page.” She acknowledged that the acting was never static: “Sometimes things work on the page, but when you stand it up, it doesn’t quite work.” Recalling one particularly charged scene, Myles described a looseness that emerged naturally: “Every word in the script was there, but in certain moments, if you’re working with somebody you trust like Gabby and I trust each other, you can throw anything at each other, and that’s nothing but magic.”
Creevy spoke of the physical challenges of her action sequences: “I definitely had a stunt double,” she laughed, “I’m not very elegant when it comes to those things – my coordination is terrible.”
On the subject of a potential second season, the two agreed that there was scope for more: “I would do that until the cows come home – I think there’s so much life and blood and power in them. I’d love to see what they do next.”
