“There’s something about power and privilege at the heart of this”: Michael D Fuller, Erin Lee Carr, Will Harrison, Johnny Berchtold, Brittany Snow and Mary Matney on Murdaugh – Death in the Family

This new true-crime eight-part miniseries, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, from creators Michael D Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, dramatises the high-profile, infamous case, based on the podcast, Murdaugh Murders by Mandy Matney, a journalist who delved into the murders that happened within the family and the police investigations that followed.

Jason Clarke takes on the role of Alex Murdaugh, a powerful attorney and part of a dynasty of men who ruled the state of South Carolina in the courtroom. Married to Maggie (Patricia Arquette), the family together with their three children presented themselves as pillars of their community: wealthy, privileged and respected. When his wife and son, Paul (Johnny Berchtold), are found brutally murdered, the spotlight eventually falls upon Alex, and the series explores the leads in the investigation, helmed by Matney (Brittany Snow), and the unearthing of the horrific crimes that took place.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the show creators, Fuller and Carr, about why they wanted to bring this story to screen, their cast choices and how invaluable it was having Matney herself on set during filming.

We spoke to Will Harrison and Johnny Berchtold about playing the Murdaugh sons and the differences between them, the brilliant ensemble cast and what they hope viewers will take away from watching this.

Snow and Matney spoke to us about authentically portraying the role in the series, the investigative journey that led to the downfall of Alex and the way Snow fitted into the character given her love for true crime podcasts.
