SOOM brings Korean barbecue and tranquil dining to Covent Garden this November

A new Korean barbecue restaurant, SOOM, will open its doors on the 10th of November at 99 St Martin’s Lane in London’s Covent Garden. The venue is the latest project from the team behind 3KOBROS, a Korean restaurant based in Canary Wharf. SOOM will focus on communal cooking and traditional flavours, in a setting designed to provide a calm and elegant atmosphere.

The name SOOM comes from the Korean word for breath, and the restaurant’s concept is centred on creating a tranquil space where diners can unwind and connect over a shared meal. The restaurant will feature concealed electric grills at each table, allowing guests to cook premium meats and seasonal vegetables themselves – a hallmark of Korean barbecue culture. The menu will include both traditional and modern Korean dishes, with options catering to vegetarian, vegan, and halal diets.

SOOM’s interior has been designed to reflect both traditional Korean aesthetics and contemporary design elements. A key feature of the main dining room is a circular twelve-seat table, intended to encourage social dining. Above it hangs a ceiling sculpture inspired by Hanok architecture, using layered wood and soft curves to create a sense of movement and light. Other design highlights include a bar area with Goryeo celadon vases and a hanji-wrapped counter, as well as a mother-of-pearl artwork depicting a Korean landscape.

At the rear of the space, a large circular gong known as a Jing is mounted on the wall. Traditionally used in Korean rituals, the gong will be struck during celebratory moments. Nearby, a glowing installation referred to as the Circle of Light aims to evoke a sense of stillness and shared rhythm. The restaurant also includes private dining areas, with one room featuring ink-wash inspired panels and another showcasing a traditional mother-of-pearl folding screen.

Prior to its official opening, SOOM will host a soft launch from the end of October to the 8th of November. During this period, visitors will receive 25% off food as part of the preview phase.
