The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, Iceland earns Michelin One Key award for outstanding hotel experience

The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon in Iceland has been awarded a Michelin One Key, a new distinction from the Michelin Guide recognising outstanding hotel experiences. The accolade has been awarded to only a small select group of international hotels since the programme launched in 2024, with The Retreat’s sister hotel, Kerlingarfjöll Highland Base, also being honoured. Hotels are evaluated via anonymous inspection, assessing criteria such as architecture, interior design, service quality and how well a property reflects its setting. A One Key designation signifies a hotel that offers a “very special stay”.

Opened in 2018, The Retreat is located within the Blue Lagoon in the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, approximately 45 minutes from Reykjavík. The property comprises a 60-suite hotel, a subterranean spa built into ancient lava formations, and a private geothermal lagoon. The Michelin Guide cited the hotel’s integration of nature and architecture, high standards of service and unique location as key factors in the award. It is also home to Moss Restaurant, which holds one Michelin Star and is one of only three Michelin-starred restaurants in Iceland. Guests at the hotel have access to the spa, private lagoon and restaurant as part of their stay.

Accommodation at The Retreat starts at £1,407 per night for a Lava View Junior Suite.
