“You have to set your game high”: Lennie James on Mayor of Kingstown season four
As Mayor of Kingstown hurtles into its fourth season, the stakes are raised when a crime-fuelled gang start to infiltrate the town and threatens the equilibrium that’s stabilised and helmed by power-player Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner). This ten-part crime series directed by Stephen Kay brings fans of the show to the edge of their seats as a new war begins and the townsfolk brace themselves for an epidemic of violence.
Newcomer Frank Jones (Lennie James) offers up an alliance with “Bunny” Washington (Tobi Bamtefa), the leader of the Crips gang and also reaches out to a reticent McLusky to try and restore order. The corrupt forces at play from the town’s prison, Anchor Bay, add further complications that disrupt their every move, and McLusky finds himself fighting to hold his position and keep the things running fairly as he also navigates keeping his former police officer brother Kyle (Taylor Handley) safe behind bars.
The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to James about what made him want to join the series, how he prepared for his gangster role and what his character’s storyline brings to the show.
