Hoko café to celebrate Lunar New Year at Seven Dials Market with free Hong Kong milk tea and lion dance

Hoko café to celebrate Lunar New Year at Seven Dials Market with free Hong Kong milk tea and lion dance

To celebrate Lunar New Year, Hong Kong café Hoko is hosting a special day at their Seven Dials location in Covent Garden. On 17th February, starting at 1pm, the team will distribute 100 complimentary servings of their signature Hong Kong Milk Tea, each accompanied by a sample of crispy wontons. The event is part of wider festivities at Seven Dials Market, which will include a traditional lion dance performance and Lunar New Year sweets and fortune cookies handed out to visitors.

The team at Hoko describes the venue as “a contemporary all-day Hong Kong café in London with a nostalgic atmosphere”, adding that they serve “authentic Hong Kong food and drinks and a memorable classic experience”. Their signature Hong Kong Milk Tea is popular, with a rich, smooth flavour that recalls the drink typically served in Hong Kong. Crispy wontons, served as tasters on Hoko’s special day, are a staple of Cantonese cuisine. In this case they’re filled with a blend of pork and shrimp.

Seven Dials Market is a popular food hall in Covent Garden, featuring a range of independent food traders and regularly providing the backdrop for cultural events. This celebration is part of its ongoing efforts to reflect the city’s diverse culinary and cultural landscape: Lunar New Year is a significant occasion for communities across East and Southeast Asia, and is increasingly observed in multicultural cities such as London. Hoko is offering the opportunity for fans of Hong Kong-style cuisine and culture to get an authentic fix – in keeping with the market’s commitment to honouring traditions with origins from all over the world.

The iconic wǔ shī lion dance, customarily performed during the festival, is believed to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits. Seven Dials’s version will take place throughout the afternoon, moving through the market to provide entertainment for visitors and contribute to the festive atmosphere. During the East Asian holiday, treats are commonly exchanged as symbols of good fortune and happiness for the coming year, and so Hoko will present classic sweets and fortune cookies to guests.

The event is free to attend and open to the public. Visitors are advised to arrive early as the giveaway is limited to the first 100 attendees from 1pm and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
