Missing Bean Coffee Roasters opens seventh sustainable community café in Charlbury

Independent coffee specialists Missing Bean Coffee Roasters have opened their latest café in Charlbury, Oxfordshire, expanding their presence in the region. The new site, which began welcoming customers this month at Alder House on Market Street, provides a community-oriented space offering ethically sourced coffee and freshly baked pastries. The opening marks the company’s seventh location across the county, as they continue their commitment to sustainable coffee and local engagement.

Missing Bean was founded in 2009 by Ori Halup and Vicky Troth and has grown from its original Turl Street location in Oxford to a network of cafés and a dedicated roastery in East Oxford. The Charlbury café sources its coffee beans from farmers around the world, with roasting taking place five days a week in the historic city. The company maintains direct relationships with producers in Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Nicaragua, focusing on ethical sourcing and fair payment.

In addition to coffee, the new outpost offers a range of sweet and savoury food options. All pastries and breads, including banana bread, focaccia and sourdough toasties, are made in-house daily using locally sourced ingredients. The space also features a dedicated Study Room, which will be used for community events, workshops and pop-ups throughout the year.

As part of its community programming, Missing Bean has announced a Matcha Masterclass in collaboration with Oxford-based Tiny Teahouse, scheduled for Saturday 14th March. During Oxford Art Week in May, multi-talented co-founder Vicky Troth will host a pop-up in the Study Room, showcasing her handmade ceramics and tumblers, which are also available for purchase online. The ceramics pop-up will run from 9th to 17th May and will include a variety of handcrafted items such as tea-light holders and decorative bowls.

Troth, who grew up in Charlbury, said: “Charlbury is my hometown, so when it came to opening a new site for Missing Bean, it only made sense to do it here. The site we’ve chosen is charming; and we’re only an hour outside London, placing us in a location that’s easily accessible to everyone. With the support of the local community, we’ve created a space that celebrates exceptional coffee, where people and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do.”

For those unable to visit in person, Missing Bean offers a selection of coffee beans, subscription services and brewing equipment through its online shop. The company’s blend collection includes The Original and The Remake, with new coffees from Peru and Rwanda expected in the coming weeks.

The Charlbury café is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, and weekends from 9am to 4pm.
