The Greyhound in Carshalton reopens after major refurbishment, blending historic charm with modern comforts

The Greyhound, a historic pub with rooms overlooking Carshalton Ponds in the London Borough of Sutton, has reopened to the public following a refurbishment of its interiors, garden and accommodation. The Grade-listed coaching inn, which dates back to 1730, welcomes guests once again as both a local pub and a countryside-style retreat within easy reach of central London.

The works have expanded the main dining room and bar area, while the Swan Room – a private dining space featuring a fireplace and views across the ponds – has also been refreshed. The room is available for hire and can accommodate up to 30 guests. Outside, the pondside garden has been redesigned with floral planters, wooden tables and festoon lighting. It also includes bookable huts for group bookings and outdoor screens for sports broadcasts.

Food remains a central focus at The Greyhound, with head chef Roberto Montoli leading a menu based around British pub classics. Smaller plates and starters include Brixham Harbour Squid and South Coast Scallops, alongside sharing nibbles. Main courses feature the Greyhound Beef Burger made with short rib and brisket, a Rack of Lamb and a Bone-in Pork Chop with burnt apple sauce. Traditional pies rotate with the seasons, while daily blackboard specials showcase fresh fish and market produce. Sunday roasts are served with all the trimmings, and the bar offers cask ales alongside a seasonal spritz menu that includes a White Sangria and a Raspberry Honeybee.

Upstairs, there are 21 individually designed bedrooms, ranging from smaller spaces for two to larger options overlooking the ponds. Fold-out beds and cots are available for families, and dogs are also welcomed. Each room includes a workspace, Nespresso machine, snack basket and honesty bar, with interiors designed to reflect the style of the pub below.

Home to resident pub dog, Barry, The Greyhound continues its community involvement through fundraising for The Royal Marsden hospital. It is located a short walk from Carshalton station, which offers direct services into London Victoria, and is close to green spaces including Box Hill and Epsom Downs. The pub is open seven days a week, with rooms starting from £115 per night on a bed and breakfast basis.
