Lisbon’s Henrique Sá Pessoa restaurant debuts private dining room inspired by chef’s personal journey

Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa has opened a private dining room at his eponymous restaurant in Lisbon’s Páteo Bagatela, offering an intimate setting for between eight and 12 guests. Located within the restaurant that launched in February this year, the concept is part of a growing international trend towards smaller, more personalised fine dining experiences. That said, it’s relatively uncommon in Portugal’s restaurant sector, where exclusivity has traditionally been defined by limited seating rather than by a narrative or biographical concept.

The new space is intended for private dinners, corporate gatherings and bespoke occasions. Sá Pessoa, one of Portugal’s internationally recognised chefs, conceived it as an extension of his own identity, drawing inspiration from private dining and chef’s table concepts found in other countries, where meals are framed around the personal narrative of the chef.

Among the items on display is a jersey autographed by basketball jersey Michael Jordan, who Sá Pessoa cites as a longstanding influence. He finds a parallel between his own work and the discipline and pursuit of excellence associated with Jordan’s career. Other personal objects and features have been incorporated into the décor, intended to give diners insight into lesser known aspects of the chef’s life. The decor features stone countertops produced by Atlas and furniture designed by Leiken. Diners face an open kitchen equipped with Gaggenau ovens, induction cooktops and ventilation systems.

“I wanted to create a space where people could get to know a little more about my references, the things that inspire me and that have been part of my journey. Cooking is a very personal form of expression, and this room allows me to share that dimension in a different way,” Sá Pessoa said.
