Ice cream and ice lolly shop, Sticks & Cones, has recently opened on Paddington Street in Marylebone, central London. The business is founded by Petra Tanos, a local resident, who created it as a neighbourhood venue for families and friends after finding there was nowhere nearby to buy freshly made ice cream.

Tanos said she had repeatedly encountered the same difficulty: her children would ask for ice cream, but the only option was a prepackaged lolly from a corner shop, and there was no local outlet selling proper scoops. She set out to open a shop combining an interest in food with a focus on quality.

Every lolly, referred to as a “Stick”, and every ice cream, described as a “Cone”, is made on the premises. Ingredients are sourced mainly from B Corp-certified suppliers, including cream and milk from The Estate Dairy, chocolate from Original Beans and fresh fruit from Natoora – no artificial flavours or colours are used.

“We make everything from scratch, properly – no shortcuts, no artificial anything. Sticks & Cones is for friends, families and visitors alike – anyone in Marylebone who appreciates a really good scoop, in a warm and friendly setting,” said Tanos.

The ice cream is made in the gelato tradition, milk-based and served at a slightly colder temperature. Flavours include Grown Up Vanilla, made with whole vanilla pods and tonka bean, Mint Stracciatella, using fresh garden mint, and Blue Moon, which combines fior di latte with blue spirulina to produce a blue colour. Rotating specials change weekly and currently include Tiramisu and a watermelon sorbet named Watermelon Sugar.

The lollies are based on paletas, the fruit-on-a-stick found across Latin America, with options ranging from Mango and Strawberry to Pineapple Yuzu Cardamom and Lychee Raspberry Rose. Lollies can be pre-ordered and delivered to events in London. The shop also serves coffee using beans from the East London roastery Climpson & Sons.

The interior features a buttercream base with primary colours and seating for up to twenty people at the rear. Facilities for children include a magnetic wall and a board for displaying pictures. The shop also offers private events for up to ten people, involving making and tasting ice cream.

The shop has been associated with the musician Harry Styles, who provided free ice cream to customers in London in July as a gesture of thanks connected to his Together Together London residency.
