Caffein, a café specialising in ceremonial-grade matcha, is opening its second London location in Angel, Islington next Tuesday, following the earlier success of its pop-up in Holborn Circus. To mark the occasion, the first hundred customers on opening day will receive a complimentary matcha. And from Tuesday to Sunday, customers can also buy signature drinks at half price, including the Signature Matcha Latte, the London Fog, which combines matcha with earl grey syrup, and the White Chocolate Matcha.

Matcha, a finely ground green tea powder, has grown in popularity across the UK in recent years, appearing in an increasing number of cafés and specialist outlets. Ceremonial-grade matcha, the highest quality designation, is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies and is typically prepared with water rather than milk, though many British cafés serve it in latte form. Caffein links the brew to potential health benefits, pointing to its antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which are believed to support metabolism, immune health and energy levels through the day. The company sources its ceremonial-grade matcha directly from the Yame region of Japan, where it is hand-picked and stone-ground before being used in their drinks.

The new café’s menu covers a range of matcha-based drinks and flavours. Alongside the Signature Matcha Latte, which is made with condensed milk, options include Blueberry, Strawberry and Agave varieties. Seasonal specials will also feature, beginning with a Yuzu Matcha Tonic and a Blood Orange Matcha Tonic. There’s also a selection of chocolates and sweet treats, with several of the desserts incorporating matcha, such as a Matcha Basque Cheesecake and a Matcha Tiramisu. For those not yet on the matcha train, the team serves special personalised hot chocolates. Customers ordering white, milk or dark hot chocolate can select the cocoa percentage, ranging from 28% to 70%, and alternative milks are always provided at no additional cost.

The Angel site becomes the company’s second permanent presence in the capital, and the business intends to continue on its trajectory, with the new location establishing its footprint in North London.
