Green Day-inspired comedy Nimrods heads to cinemas for one-night global event
A coming-of-age road trip comedy inspired by the early days of punk rock band Green Day is heading to cinemas worldwide this August. Nimrods, written and directed by Lee Kirk, will screen in more than 700 cinemas across 39 countries on 11th August as part of a global event from Trafalgar Releasing, ahead of its US theatrical release on 14th August.
Inspired by Green Day’s formative years touring in a van before the release of their breakthrough album Dookie, the film follows Tommy (Mason Thames), an aspiring musician who embarks on a cross-country road trip after falling for an elaborate prank that convinces him his band has been invited to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. Alongside Thames, the cast includes Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Sean Gunn and Keen Ruffalo, while Green Day themselves also appear.
The global cinema event will include an exclusive introduction from the band, followed by bonus live performances recorded at Los Angeles’s Palladium after the film. Named after Green Day’s 1997 album Nimrod, the project is produced by the band’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool alongside Tim Perell, with Ryan Kroft, Michael Rapino and Jonathan Daniel serving as executive producers.
Coinciding with the film’s release, a 30-track soundtrack arrives on 31st July, featuring 22 songs spanning Green Day’s career, the new track I’m Never Gonna R.I.P., previously unreleased live recordings from the Palladium performance featured in the film, as well as music by The Paradox, Ultra Q, Mckenna Grace and the fictional band Analog Dogs.
