The Macallan opens first UK boutique in Harrods
The Macallan has opened its first domestic UK boutique inside Harrods in Knightsbridge, taking over the space formerly occupied by the department store’s Baccarat Bar. The Speyside distiller says the shop houses one of the most extensive ranges of its single malt Scotch whisky available outside of its estate in Scotland, and is an early stage in a wider push to expand the company’s retail network.
Situated next to the Harrods Fine Wines and Spirits Department, the boutique stocks rare releases and limited edition expressions alongside the core range. To mark the opening, the Spanish painter and illustrator Javi Aznárez, a long-term collaborator with Macallan, has designed packaging for their Rare Cask 2026. The edition is limited to 100 bottles, sold exclusively at Harrods, and was released on the boutique’s opening day on a first-come, first-served basis.
Customers can have bottles engraved with a name, date or inscription at a personalisation and gifting station, and the space includes a sampling bar. It can also be converted into a private dining room, with menus based on seasonal produce associated with the company’s Speyside estate.
The interior was designed in collaboration with the architect Jamie Fobert. Fobert was awarded a CBE in 2020 for services to architecture and has worked on the National Portrait Gallery extension and the interiors of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi in Venice, among many other projects. The design follows the brand’s retail concept, Nurtured by Nature, and uses botanical features and displays intended to reference the 485-acre estate in Speyside.
Materials and detailing across the boutique are drawn from what the company calls its Six Pillars: Spiritual Home, Curiously Small Stills, Finest Cut, Exceptional Oak Casks, Natural Colour and Peerless Spirit/Sherry Seasoned. Copper walls refer to the distillery’s stills, oak flooring and petal-shaped shelving reference the casks that the company says account for up to 80% of its whisky’s flavour and all of its natural colour, and albariza stone nods to the soil of Jerez de la Frontera in Spain, where the sherry used to season those casks originates. The use of red relates to founder Alexander Reid, whose surname derives from a Scottish term meaning “the red one”, while waved walls are intended to evoke the River Spey.
The space also displays work by the designer David Carson, who recently created a visual identity for the brand’s Timeless collection, and by the pop artist Sir Peter Blake, whose collage brings together figures from earlier commissions on the lawn of Easter Elchies House.
The Macallan’s creative director, Jaume Ferràs said: “Opening our new boutique at Harrods marks a major milestone for The Macallan, expanding our presence in London and building on our ambitions of delivering standout retail experiences for consumers across the globe. In partnership with Harrods, we have been able to push boundaries and curate an incomparable retail experience, bringing craftmanship and creativity to the fore.”
The opening extends a relationship between the two companies that has included an interactive installation marking a collection of whiskies released for the 60th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise. The Macallan was founded in 1824, when Alexander Reid distilled the first batch of whisky at the site in Speyside. Its co-conspirator Harrods, the iconic luxury department store, opened on the site in 1849, expanding over the intervening years to occupy over a million square feet of selling space over more than 330 departments – the largest property of its kind in Europe.
Andre Lewis, head of buying for food, wine and spirits at the store, enthused: “We are thrilled to deepen our long-standing relationship with The Macallan through the opening of this exceptional new boutique at Harrods. Our customers come to us in search of the world’s finest craftsmanship and most compelling luxury experiences, and The Macallan consistently delivers both. This boutique will offer an extraordinary opportunity to sample and purchase some of the rarest and most celebrated single malts, brought to life through a space that beautifully captures the spirit of the Speyside Estate. We look forward to welcoming whisky connoisseurs and curious visitors alike to discover this remarkable destination within our store.”
