Bar Douro to open third London restaurant on the Soho street where it all began
Portuguese restaurant group Bar Douro will open its third London site at 10 Greek Street in Soho this October, marking a decade since founder Max Graham launched the original restaurant beneath the railway arches at London Bridge.
The Soho site returns Graham to the street where he first began trading in London. In 2013, three years before the first Bar Douro opened at Flat Iron Square in November 2016, he spent eight months running a Churchill’s Port House pop-up on Greek Street, selling Portuguese wines and ports. Churchill’s, the port house founded by his father John Graham in 1981, remains the family business, based in Porto.
“In 2013 I was standing on Greek Street pouring port, persuading Londoners that Portugal was one of Europe’s most exciting food and wine cultures,” says Max Graham, founder of Bar Douro. “Coming back to Soho all these years later feels incredibly special. This isn’t just another opening; it’s a full-circle moment. Soho is where the dream started, and now we’re bringing everything we’ve learnt over the last decade back to where it all began.”
The Soho site will be the first in the UK to import and serve Maronesa vaca velha, or mature cow, beef from the mountains of Trás-os-Montes in northern Portugal. Maronesa is among the country’s oldest native cattle breeds and holds PDO status. The cattle’s long working produces a deeper flavour and ivory-coloured marbling, and the meat is rarely available outside the Iberian Peninsula. It will appear in several dishes exclusive to the Soho branch, including a Grilled Vaca Velha Ribeye on the bone.
Executive chef Neuza Leal will oversee the menu, which combines existing Bar Douro dishes such as Croquetes de Alheira, Bacalhau à Brás, Gambas à Guilho and Secretos de Porco Preto with new items created for the Soho site. The menu places greater emphasis on lesser-known Portuguese regions and seasonal produce sourced through direct relationships with farmers, fishermen and winemakers.
The wine list will feature native grape varieties and heritage winemaking techniques, with producers including Hugo Mendes, António Picotes and Quinta das Bágeiras, alongside wines and ports from Churchill’s. Bar Douro holds one of the largest Portuguese wine list in the UK.
The Greek Street premises will include counter seating around an open kitchen, an azulejo-tiled dining room and a cellar room intended for tastings, producer dinners and events. It joins Bar Douro London Bridge and Bar Douro City at Finsbury Avenue Square, which opened in early 2020.
