BAO celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival with Borough moon market and guest chef skewer feast

London restaurant group BAO will mark the Mid-Autumn Festival with a one-day outdoor grill party at its Borough site on Thursday 24th September, followed by a month-long sharing menu at four of its London restaurants featuring skewers created by four guest chefs.

The celebrations open at BAO Borough, where the team will set up several grills outside the restaurant from noon to 4pm, or until stock runs out. Two special dishes will be served: the Westholme x BAO Grilled Sacha Wagyu Bao (£7.50), made with North Australian wagyu striploin marinated in shacha sauce with braised shallots and daikon pickle in a gua bao, and an Apple Whisky Highball (£10) made with Suntory Toki whisky. Then, from the following Tuesday until the last week of October, a Moon Festival Set Menu priced at £35 per person will be available at BAO in King’s Cross, City, Borough and Marylebone.

The menu for the month, to be ordered by the whole table, is built around platters for sharing. It begins with an individual Westholme x BAO Grilled Sacha Wagyu Bao, followed by a central platter of barbecue skewers contributed by the visiting chefs. Abby Lee of Malaysian restaurant Mambow has created Malay Chipirones, with grilled baby squid, squid ink and a kaffir lime curry sauce. Nil Mutluer, who works as Heal Goblin, has contributed Xinjiang Lamb Skewers of lamb kofte seasoned with cumin, coriander and chilli. Mr Ko of Hackney restaurant Miga has made Korean BBQ Ribeye Skewers with sake and pickled celery, while Sirichai Kularbwong of Thai restaurant Singburi has produced Khao Jee Sticky Rice Skewers – egg-washed rice cakes tossed with Maggi sauce and finished with pork floss. Smacked cucumbers, kimchi and lard soy rice will be served alongside, and dessert is a Moon Face Bao filled with salted egg custard.

The Suntory Toki Apple Highball, the Westholme x BAO Grilled Sacha Wagyu Bao and the Moon Face Bao will also all be sold individually across all BAO sites – which include Soho, Borough, King’s Cross, Shoreditch, Marylebone, Battersea and the City – from 29th September.

BAO co-founder and creative director Erchen Chang explained: “Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is traditionally a moment of gathering and reunion. It marks the middle of autumn and is deeply connected to the harvest season – a time when families and communities come together to celebrate abundance, give thanks and share food. For BAO, this is a universal celebration of the end of a season.”
