Black Sheep Coffee unveils Hojicha lattes and pumpkin spice in autumn menu

Black Sheep Coffee has launched its autumn menu across its UK shops introducing the roasted Japanese green tea Hojicha to its drinks range for the first time, alongside new Matcha options, a Masala Chai and the seasonal return of Pumpkin Spice.

Hojicha is made by roasting green tea leaves, which gives it a deeper, toasted flavour and a brown colour, distinguishing it from the bright green appearance and vegetal taste of Matcha. It has been gaining ground in UK coffee shops as an alternative to Matcha, which has dominated speciality menus in recent years.

Three Hojicha drinks feature on the autumn line-up: a Hojicha Latte, a Vanilla Hojicha Latte and a Salted Caramel & Macadamia Hojicha Latte. All three are available hot or iced. Customers can also choose Matcha as the base for the same flavour combinations, meaning the Salted Caramel & Macadamia Matcha Latte joins the menu as well, also served hot or iced.

Pumpkin Spice returns for the season in two forms. The Pumpkin Spice Latte is available hot or iced with cream and pumpkin spice sauce, and there is also a Pumpkin Spice Matcha Latte, again offered both ways.

Completing the range are a Masala Chai, served hot or iced, and the Maple & Pecan Açaí Bowl, which returns for the autumn months.

Eirik Holth and Gabriel Shohet, co-founders and co-chief executives of Black Sheep Coffee, said: “We’re always looking for new ways to shake up the coffee menu, and Hojicha felt like a natural fit for autumn. It has a rich, roasted flavour that’s completely different from Matcha, but works just as well in a latte – hot or iced. Whether you’re already a Matcha fan or have never tried Hojicha before, there’s plenty to discover on this year’s autumn menu. Whether you’re firmly on team Matcha or ready to try Hojicha, there are plenty of new combinations to get into this season.”

The chain, founded in 2013 by Holth and Shohet, serves speciality-grade Robusta coffee alongside a range of Arabica beans. The full autumn menu will be available nationwide from September,  with prices starting from £3.59.
