La Maritxu brings back savoury Manchego Basque Cheesecake for National Day of Spain
London bakery La Maritxu has reintroduced its Manchego Basque Cheesecake to mark the National Day of Spain on 12th October. The limited-edition cake, a savoury version of the brand’s signature bake, is being sold alongside Manchego gift boxes at its four London sites in Connaught Village, Greenwich, Kingly Court and Coal Drops Yard while stocks last.
The National Day of Spain, known as the Fiesta Nacional, is held each year on 12th October and commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. In Spain it is a public holiday, marked by a military parade in Madrid.
La Maritxu, run by husband-and-wife team Ignacio and Lucia, specialises in Basque-style cheesecake inspired by Bilbao. The style is baked at a high temperature without a biscuit base, which produces a dark, caramelised top and a soft centre. The Manchego version was developed with Spanish cheesemaker García Baquero and has been awarded two stars at the Great Taste Awards.
Manchego is a sheep’s milk cheese from the La Mancha region of central Spain. According to the bakery, the cheesecake keeps the smooth, custard-like centre and caramelised top of its original recipe, with the cheese adding a savoury note throughout. It’s available in several sizes: a single slice costs £6.50, a mini cheesecake £13, a medium £17 and a whole cheesecake £44. For the occasion, each site will also sell a limited number of Manchego gift boxes, each containing Manchego cream cheese, a slice of Manchego cheese and a medium Manchego cheesecake.
Both the cheesecake and the gift boxes are sold in person at La Maritxu’s shops in Connaught Village near Marble Arch, Kingly Court off Carnaby Street in Soho, Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross, and at the bakery’s branch in Greenwich.
