Apple TV+ tends to chart its own course among streaming platforms, and its unconventional spin on an alien-invasion science fiction series highlights that philosophy. With a globe-spanning narrative, the show prioritises atmosphere and characters over the straw fire of spectacle. In its third season, the previously separated storylines collide into a unified high-stakes mission.

We spoke to creator, writer and producer of the show, Simon Kinberg. In previous interviews, he had likened the first and second seasons to arcs of a film, and we were curious to learn whether he still saw the third season akin to the third act of a movie. Kinberg shared how his experience with the X-Men franchise prepared him for the challenges of ensemble productions, ensuring that each character is serviced appropriately. Science fiction in general, but Invasion in particular, often lends itself to interpretation and metaphorical reading, we were interested in how much of this is already part of the writing process for Kinberg and his team. Finally, the creator spoke to us about the addition of Eric Lange to the ensemble in its third season, and how their previous collaboration on Sugar led to the actor being immediately considered for the part of Hollander.
