Zorawar Kalra on new opening Farzi Café: “We bring innovation to Indian cuisine”

Farzi Café, the latest Indian restaurant to open in London, is the brainchild of Zorawar Kalra, son of one of the true legends of traditional Indian cuisine, Jiggs Kalra. The restaurateur took an innovative approach with his ventures – the Farzis and the more upscale Masala Library in New Delhi – and he has now launched his first operation in the western world.

Known for a modernist approach, Farzi Café fits in nicely with the taste of Londoners. The stylish site – which cost around £4m to open – is located on Haymarket, next to the Theatre Royal.

After tasting some of the delicious dishes on the menu – the Veal Ossobucco Ishtu and the Butter Roast Beef Marrow are two of the shinier stars – and the astrology-inspired cocktails, we spoke with Kalra about his project, the challenges of opening in a completely different market and his expectations. A young but seasoned businessman, the restaurateur showed great excitement and hinted at his dream of also opening a fine-dining venture in the West End.
