Different ways to set up your living room

The living room, unsurprisingly, is at the centre of our lives. It’s the room in which we socialise, snuggle up with a movie or sit around the Christmas tree. When people come to visit, it’s the room that best describes our personality and what we hold closest to our hearts. It’s important, then, that it’s set up in a way that suits our own singular lifestyle. Here are a few ways that you can design your living room around your own values.

The entertainment centre

For video gamers and film lovers, nothing would be more fitting that an entertainment station. In this room, the TV is king, so make sure you place it for optimum viewing, with a decent stand that can fit all your accessories. Surround sound can create that immersive experience for home cinema and gaming alike, and you will also want to think about lighting: if your screen is glossy, you want as little interference as possible, and backout blinds may be necessary. When it comes to chairs, recliners are recommended and in terms of art, you might want to check out out some of the custom film and game posters; when they are professionally framed, they make for a great display.

The library

Those who take a lot more joy from the simple pleasure of reading might want to consider turning their lounge into a personal library. Of course, bookcases are a must, but whether you go for a traditional oak finish or a more modern minimalistic design is up to you. You might consider a cosy corner where you can hide with your latest thriller, or if you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, you could create your own private snug to curl up in. Coffee tables create that comfy bookshop feel and can be extra storage for your favourite volumes. And if you still want wall space to hang up your art, you could consider high shelves.

The music studio

If you are a musician, you probably like to jam. But instead of keeping your instruments in the studio, make your piano your centrepiece, or prop a guitar by the sofa. Perform for your friends or even if you don’t play, let them perform for you. If you are simply a music appreciator, go vintage with a retro record player or go high-tech with a decent sound system (though go easy on the bass if you want to keep your neighbours happy).
