Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre was the big winner at the inaugural Great British Theatres Awards, taking home two prizes at a ceremony celebrating the venues and people shaping British theatre.

Hosted by West End star Marisha Wallace at Central Hall Westminster, the event marked the 50th anniversary of Theatres Trust, with nearly 200 nominations from across the UK.

Citizens Theatre scooped Great British Theatre 2026 and Great Renovation following its ambitious redevelopment, while London’s @sohoplace won Great New Build as the first purpose-built West End theatre in 50 years. Chichester Festival Theatre was recognised for its sustainability efforts, and Eden Court in Inverness and London’s Polka Theatre shared the Great Community Connection award.

Other winners included Chester’s Storyhouse, Dorset’s Sherborne Studio Theatre and the National Theatre, while actor Julie Hesmondhalgh received the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by playwright James Graham, for her tireless support of regional and community theatres.

Unlike traditional theatre awards celebrating performances, the Great British Theatres Awards put the spotlight on the buildings themselves, recognising their vital role as cultural and community hubs at a time when many venues face an uncertain future.
