Ara Maris hotel debuts in Sorrento with modern design, Michelin-starred chef and wellness focus

Ara Maris Hotel & Spa, a new design-led boutique hotel, has opened its doors in the heart of Sorrento. Positioned above the Gulf of Naples, the property offers a modern take on Mediterranean hospitality, with a focus on contemporary architecture, regional cuisine and wellness. The accommodation, which is adults-only (welcoming guests aged 10 and above), features 49 rooms and suites, and plans further developments, including a new culinary direction under a Michelin-starred chef.

The hotel’s design was developed by Milan-based firm Spagnulo & Partners, who sought to create a unified narrative across the architecture, interiors and landscaping. The façade draws inspiration from 1960s Italian modernism, referencing architect Gio Ponti, and features geometric panels illuminated by a custom lighting system. Inside, bespoke ceramics, custom furnishings and recurring material motifs are prominent, with Italian craftsmanship evident in elements such as Giovanni De Maio ceramics, Listone Giordano woods, Molteni furniture and Panzeri lighting.

At the centre is an elliptical swimming pool surrounded by nearly 2,000 square metres of gardens, providing a secluded space in a central location. There’s also a rooftop sky bar with views across the Gulf of Naples. Public spaces host rotating exhibitions of contemporary Italian art, in partnership with Orma Art, exploring Mediterranean identity.

This year, Ara Maris welcomes Luigi Lionetti as executive chef. Lionetti, who previously achieved a Michelin star at Punta Tragara in Capri, plans to foreground “authentic luxury: cuisine that is generous yet precise, expressive yet grounded in tradition and always focused on the guest”. Menus will highlight local produce, including tomatoes, olive oil, mozzarella, citrus fruits and seafood from the Gulf. The Lumi Sky Lounge will offer a tapas-style experience, while the main restaurant will present a creative take on Campanian and Sorrentine cuisine.

Wellness is anchored by Thala Spa, which draws on Mediterranean influences and provides treatments such as the Red Coral Signature Ritual and Lemon Massage, using local ingredients. The spa works with Italian and international wellness brands, and plans to introduce new treatments and technology later this year.

Ara Maris positions itself as a contemporary alternative to the more traditional hospitality of the Amalfi Coast, aiming to attract travellers seeking design, gastronomy and wellness. The hotel is accessible via Naples International Airport, with rates starting at €586 per night.
