It should come as no surprise that The Bikeriders is based on a book of photographs (by Danny Lyon, from 1967) – every single frame of the movie could easily form a photo itself, not least one of the opening images of Austin Butler as Benny broodingly leaning over a pool table, all guns and hair, that is instantly iconic. Simmering with style and grit, this oil-drenched, engine-growl-backed insight into the world of 60s biker gangs from Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) is one to soak oneself in. Led by powerhouse performances from Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer alongside Butler, and a fabulous supporting cast that includes Mike Faist and Michael Shannon, the movie captures both the allure and dangers of a life built around bikes, a rejection of societal rules and a certain brand of performative masculinity, set against a changing America, as this band of outcasts revel in their rebellion and camaraderie, but also fall victim to cycles of – ultimately pointless – violence.

The Upcoming had the chance for an in-depth chat with the movie’s director ahead of the home release to discuss the process of taking Lyon’s images and stories about the Midwestern motorcycle gang “The Vandals” from page to screen. He shared how he wished to recreate the era and complex subculture with authenticity by leveraging the narrative depth in the book’s interviews, taking cues from films such as The Outsiders and Good Fellas for its aesthetic. We discussed the epic casting for the film’s central trio and supporting characters, highlighting how each actor adopted a unique approach to their roles.

Comer, in particular, meticulously recreated the accent and mannerisms of her character, in stark contrast to Hardy’s portrayal of Johnny, which was distinctly more instinctive. He reflected on the decision to tell this tale from the perspective of a female protagonist, with Kathy’s viewpoint giving the audience a way in to understanding both the appeal and darker aspects of such a clan. We also discussed the press tour and phenomenal reception for the feature so far, not least how Butler has had many an interviewer swooning in real life, not only in character.
