If last night’s Mister Lasagna launch was any indication, the war on carbs is officially over. Londoners, rejoice!

Mister Lasagna is how Italians do fast food, offering traditional and tasty cuisine made with fresh and carefully sourced ingredients. With a heavy dose of pizza choices in London, this is a very welcome change in Italian dining. Lasagna pans and fresh sandwiches line the counter as diners walk through the door and there’s a subtle waft of garlic in the air.

Based in the heart of Soho, the café is ideal for breakfast meetings over pastries or a quick and filling lunch. Coffee and espresso are a given; as for the alcohol, there is an extensive wine list and the bar is nicely stocked with Italian favourites like Campari and limoncello.

The concept is simple: lasagna made with love and homemade pasta sheets. The project was started by two men who missed their grandmothers’ cooking. In the process, the guys realised Londoners are missing out and decided to bring proper lasagna to the hungry masses.

With 21 different options of lasagna on the menu, it was hard to pick which to start with. The menu includes classic meat and veggie options, alongside innovative new twists like pumpkin or, if you’re feeling fancy, truffle lasagna. Our favourites of the night were the artichoke and pesto samples, which were creamy, cheesy and basically perfect.

When not rammed with journalists, the space is surprisingly generous, with cosy booths and long tables downstairs, each adorned with a basil, chili or tomato plant that adds to the authentic feel. The decor is quirky, with a green wall with the restaurant’s logo on it made of real grass and perfect for selfies.

Mister Lasagna opens today in Soho. Get there early if you want a slice – they don’t accept reservations.
