Made in Prague Festival opens this month at Czech Centre London, showcasing contemporary Czech cinema

The Czech Centre London will host the 29th edition of the Made in Prague Festival this November, presenting a curated selection of the country’s films at several venues in the capital, including the BFI IMAX, BFI Player, ICA, Regent Street Cinema and The Garden Cinema. The month-long event aims to introduce audiences to contemporary Czech cinema through a series of UK premieres, documentaries and animated features.
Organised annually, the festival has run for nearly 30 years, and continues to focus on showcasing Czech filmmaking talent. This year’s programme includes a mix of historical dramas, debut features and experimental documentaries. Among the highlights is the UK’s first screening of Jiří Mádl’s historical drama Waves, which recounts the story of Czechoslovak Radio journalists who risked their lives to broadcast independent news during the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion. The production, which won the Satellite Award for Best Foreign Language Film, was also the most watched film in Czech cinemas last year.
Another UK premiere is Caravan, the first feature by director Zuzana Kirchnerová, which explores themes of motherhood, adolescence and the societal perception of disability. It has received critical acclaim for its intimate and nuanced portrayal of personal and social challenges. Also screening is I’m Not Everything I Want to Be, a documentary by Klára Tasovská that examines identity, freedom and self-expression through the life and work of Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková. Constructed using Jarcovjáková’s private diaries and thousands of analogue photographs, the documentary is the country’s official submission for the 2025 Academy Awards.
The Made in Prague Festival remains one of the UK’s key platforms for Central European cinema. According to the organisers, the event seeks to foster cultural exchange and broaden understanding of Czech history and contemporary society through film.
