Chef Jody Williams to open first UK Buvette in Covent Garden this spring

Chef Jody Williams, the James Beard award-winning chef and restaurateur, will open a branch of her well-known New York establishment in London this spring. The new site will be located in Neal’s Yard, in the heart of Covent Garden, marking the first time the beloved bistro will have a presence in the UK.

Buvette was originally founded by Williams 14 years ago in New York’s West Village and has since gained a reputation for its French-inspired menu and casual, neighbourhood atmosphere. The London opening will bring the brand’s signature approach to food and dining to a new audience in one of the capital’s busiest districts. Williams, who co-owns several other acclaimed New York establishments – Via Carota, I Sodi, The Commerce Inn and Bar Pisellino – with her wife Rita Sodi, has received considerable recognition in the culinary world. The James Beard Foundation, which is regarded as one of the highest authorities in American food, awarded her the title of Best Chef in New York City in 2019.

The expansion to London reflects the growing trend of celebrated international chefs bringing their concepts to the city, which has become a global hub for diverse and high-quality dining experiences. The choice of Neal’s Yard, with its busy mix of independent shops and eateries, makes for a vibrant new fixture in London’s own food culture. While a set opening date, and details about the new menu and design have yet to be released, the team describes it as being “designed for spontaneity: a quick coffee between shops, a leisurely lunch, or post-theatre cocktails and supper with friends”. The New York venue, which has built a following for specialities like Croque MonsieurCoq au Vin and Tarte Tatin. is known for its all-day service, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a selection of French wines and classic cocktails.

Williams commented on the forthcoming opening, saying: “We’re excited to bring Buvette to London and to be part of the city’s dynamic food scene. Neal’s Yard feels like the perfect home for our first UK restaurant.”
